Holy shit, I’m excited. I was equally excited earlier this summer, only to get the somewhat recent word that Alex and Steve — despite having bought their tickets already — weren’t going to be able to make it to the best show in years. But I’m getting ahead of myself and starting to ramble. But I’m just so damn excited.
Starting from the top: It was announced back in April that Touch and Go/Quarterstick Records were throwing a block party in Chicago with an amazing lineup, including Shellac, Girls Against Boys, Man…or Astroman?, and Tara Jane O’Neil just to name a few. It’s more than two days of music by some truly great bands starting Sept. 8. Hell, even Big Black is slated to play a few songs in their first performance in almost 20 years — that alone is worth the drive and the price of admission.
I, of course, never being on top of such things found out about the show only at the end of June. (I’m so lame; my last show was four years ago.) But I was surprised to see that there were still tickets available and bought my three-day pass almost immediately. Steve and Alex bought theirs too but decided two weeks ago to scrap the trip in favor of work (Alex’s ticket never even arrived in the mail). I was bummed at first — and still am, a little — but with Steve’s extra ticket burning a hole in my pocket started scouting people who would appreciate the lineup, could take Friday, Sept. 8 off from work, and didn’t mind making the 13 hour drive to Chicago.
Well, it seems we’ve got a new group: It looks like Al and Sam can make the trip instead. Al expressed an interest all along and just wasn’t sure he could swing the day off, whereas Sam’s eyes lit up when I mentioned it to him for the first time a week ago (apparently he was a DJ in college, which was news to me). Luckily, tickets are still available even at this late date and I snatched up another one tonight when I got the latest word from Al.
Some concessions had to be made, naturally; we’re not going to be able to see any of Sunday’s bands in order to make it back to Philly at a reasonable hour, but it beats not going at all. So pending some final work approvals we’re good to go, and we even have an extra seat left if anyone knows someone looking for a ride.
